Who Is ABTC?
- ABTC is a certification board of and for transplant professionals.
- ABTC is incorporated separately from NATCO and has its own Board of Governors.
HOW DOES A TRANSPLANT PROFESSIONAL BECOME A MEMBER OF ABTC?
- All currently certified transplant professionals are members of ABTC.
HOW DOES A TRANSPLANT PROFESSIONAL BECOME CERTIFIED?
- By passing a written certification examination which has been offered since 1988.
- Certification is valid for a period of three (3) years.
- At the completion of the initial certification period, continued certification is obtained by documentation of continuing education activities or by re-passing the certification examination.
WHAT ARE THE QUALIFICATIONS TO TAKE THE EXAMINATION?
- In order to be considered eligible for the CERTIFICATION EXAMINATION FOR CLINICAL TRANSPLANT COORDINATORS, a candidate must have completed 12 months of clinical vascular organ coordinator work experience by the date the candidate mails in their examination application.
- In order to be considered eligible for the CERTIFICATION EXAMINATION FOR PROCUREMENT TRANSPLANT COORDINATORS, a candidate must have completed 12 months of vascular organ procurement coordinator work experience by the date the candidate mails in their examination application.
- In order to be considered eligible for the CERTIFICATION EXAMINATION FOR TRANSPLANT NURSES, a candidate must have completed 24 months as a registered nurse, of which 12 months' work experience must be directly involved in the care of the solid organ transplant patient.
HOW ARE CERTIFIED PROFESSIONAL IDENTIFIED?
- Certified professionals may use the credential "CCTC" (Certified Clinical Transplant Coordinator), "CPTC" (Certified Procurement Transplant Coordinator) or "CCTN" (Certified Clinical Transplant Nurse) following his/her name.
HOW IS THE MEMBERSHIP OF ABTC REPRESENTED TO ITS GOVERNING BODY?
- Three ABTC representatives to the Board of Governors are elected bi-annually by the membership.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE AN ABTC CERTIFIED PROFESSIONAL?
- Use of the certification credential CCTC, CPTC or CCTN attests to the transplant community and to the public that the individual has met a standard of competency and therefore possesses the necessary knowledge and skills needed to provide quality care for transplant donors and recipients.
